Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. Fearing stress, her parents were not keen to let the actress pursue acting until turning 18. Perry, who was too shy for acting in school, began to perform in theater classes at Northwestern University because she wanted to make new friends. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, relocated to New York in search of television roles. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness led her to California to find theater work. Perry starred with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. Her father played her on The ABC Drama Scandal. The same year, she played a young version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a youthful version. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she got the role via an audition.
